ODEFs original objective was to improve the socio-economic conditions of poor Honduran women and their families through training, technical assistance and micro loans. Today it provides several financial services to men and women, with women still weighing higher at 56% of the portfolio.
ODEF’s strategy focuses on rural and suburban areas where it has 32 branches throughout 9 states in Northern Honduras. Its Headquarters are in San Pedro Sula, the second largest city in the country (Honduras’ industrial capital).
ODEF has been operating in Honduras since 1989 and became regulated as a non-bank FI in July 2008. Norfund has supported the institution directly by means of a 3 MUSD loan, and indirectly through LOCFUND as well as two other Norfund invested funds: HEFF (Higher Education funding) and Prospero (Equity minority participation).
