March 3: Power sector challenges and investment trends in Africa

Keynote: Anton Eberhard (University of Cape Town)

Africa is facing major power challenges; access to energy is low and unequal, the power infrastructure is underdeveloped and supply is unreliable. What changes are needed in order to solve these issues? Who are the actors? Anton Eberhard, professor at Graduate School of Business, University of Cape Town will introduce the topic before we open up for discussion.

Anton Eberhard's presentation is available here.

March 18: Access to energy

Keynotes: Ørnulf Strøm (Norad), Karina Standal (Senter for Utvikling og Miljø, UiO), Erik Sauar (Brighterlite/ Differ)

The electricity grid typically reaches only a minority of the population in most African states. Although electrification is a political priority, often supported by donors, the costs are high for the relatively small amounts of energy consumed, and power supply is often unreliable. Are off-grid technologies a practical alternative, and are there commercial alternatives to the traditional utility model? What are the advantages and challenges with mini-grid solutions? We will have a presentation by Ørnulf Strøm followed by two prepared comments and an open discussion.

(in Norwegian)
