African Century Foods (ACF) is Sub-Sahara Africa’s largest aquaculture producer with tilapia farms in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Uganda. Its supply of affordable, high-quality fresh protein is important in countries facing challenges related to the availability and affordability of food supplies.

Norfund invested in ACF in 2013 and is a 30% shareholder in the company. Sustainable agri- and aquaculture in East and Southern Africa is among Norfund’s strategic focus areas.

In 2016, African Century Foods and Nutreco’s subsidiary Skretting Zambia entered into a joint venture for the production, sale and distribution of tilapia feed. In June 2017, the joint venture opened the first dedicated aquaculture feed plant in Zambia.

The new plant, which has a capacity of 35,000 tonnes of feed, is located at Siavonga on Lake Kariba, close to the main fish farming areas in both Zambia and Zimbabwe. The facility houses a dedicated line for extruded tilapia feed and a mash feed line for other animal species. A part of the capacity will be used to supply ACF’s tilapia farms (Lake Harvest) with the remaining supply going to the wider southeast African region.
