Micro Kenya Ltd (“Micro Kenya”), Kenya and Uganda

Micro Kenya began operations in 2000 and the Ugandan office (Micro Uganda Ltd) opened in 2001. Micro Kenya extends micro-loans to employed individuals based on agreements with their employers both in Kenya and Uganda. In addition, Micro Kenya engages in some equipment financing for small companies operating in its markets. Norfund extended a Kenya Shillings loan facility to Micro Kenya in 2003 and the current Norfund commitment under this facility is approximately USD 125,000. Final repayment is at year-end 2005.

Micro Kenya’s salary based lending concept allows low-waged employees to improve their standard of living. Micro Kenya clients invest their borrowed money into businesses, homes, consumer items and tuition. As per mid-year 2004 Micro Kenya had 4,000 active clients and salary based lending agreements with nearly 200 companies in Kenya and Uganda."
