Long-term capital for small businesses in El Salvador and the Dominican Republic

Norfund is investing USD 30 million in Banco Cuscatlán in El Salvador and USD 20 million-equivalent, in Banco Promerica in the Dominican Republic, to grow access to finance for small and medium-sized businesses.

The loan to Banco Cuscatlán will support lending to small and medium-sized businesses and strenghten the productive sector in El Salvador, an economy that still relies heavily on remittances. The bank projects 20% growth in its SME client portfolio compared to 2025.

“By providing long-term subordinated capital, an instrument that is scarce in many emerging markets, this financing reinforces Banco Cuscatlán’s strong track record in financial inclusion, in line with Norfund’s mission to create jobs and improve lives,”

Senior Investment Manager

In the Dominican Republic, Norfund is providing a local currency loan to Banco Promerica to grow the bank’s SME and green financing portfolios. Despite strong economic progress, around 23% of Dominicans live below the national poverty line, and informality remains widespread.

«Norfund’s longer-term local-currency funding helps Banco Promerica better match its assets and liabilities and offer SME clients more suitable terms. The investment is closely aligned with Norfund’s financial inclusion strategy by expanding access to finance that drive employment and inclusive economic growth»,
